Usha Martin’s (UML) Engineering Labour Union has expressed dissatisfaction over irregular and delayed disbursement of salaries. The unhappy workers who claim their salaries have not been paid on time for the last two to three years, feel that their condition will be improved if Usha Martin’s Ranchi plant (which manufactures wire rope) is acquired by Tata Steel. It has requested the Government to intervene and take steps to make this possible.

It is to be noted that last month, Tata Steel had formally acquired the steel business of Usha Martin for Rs 4,300-4,700 crore. It is expected to take six to nine months for the deal to be completed.

The Union, which is affiliated to the Hind Mazdoor Sabha has sent a written request to the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Raghubar Das, to use his office to resolve the long-time exploitation of the workers of UML and facilitate the sale of UML’s wire manufacturing facility at Jharkhand also to Tata Steel, in the hope that their future of the workers will be secure.

The Ranchi facility of UML, which covers an area of over 100 acres, has over 1,700 employees and produces wire ropes that are used in oil and offshore mining, cranes, elevators, aerial ropeways, and bridges.
