There is hope for the innumerable qualified but unemployed nurses in Meghalaya. The Government of Meghalaya and the Ministry of Labour are planning to organise job fairs in the State, where unemployed nurses can register for overseas jobs.
The nurses who register at the fairs will be given training in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. During the six-month training, these nurses will be trained in language skills too.
Agreements will be entered into with the parties from overseas that are interested in recruiting these nurses. The government will be investing about Rs 50,000 to train each nurse. Post training, these nurses are likely to land jobs abroad and earn anywhere between Rs 1.5 to 2 lakhs per month. The cost of accommodation and training may be deducted from the salaries of the nurses.
According to Ampareen Lyngdoh, health minister, Meghalaya, many institutions and organizations from Singapore, Japan, Australia, Germany, the UK and the UAE have shown their keenness to hire nurses from the State.
Of the more than 5,000 people who appeared for the last nursing exams in Meghalaya, about 200+ were granted jobs in the government health sector.
Meanwhile, in Kerala, many nurses have been left in the lurch with either no jobs or very low-paying jobs in the UK. Recently, 380 nurses who were hired for childcare homes in the UK have realized that they have been duped. Some of them have not been appointed at all, while others who have been appointed after a delay of over six months are being paid way lower than they were promised.
