The artificial intelligence (AI) centre of Ericsson— the Swedish multinational networking and telecommunications company— in Bangalore, will now have high-tech engineers from Niche AI to help in their India operations. These engineers were acquihired by Ericsson.

Ericsson is trying to establish a team of 150 high-tech engineers in India, for which it is on the lookout for more technical talent for acquihiring.

In 2018, the Company had launched the India wing of Global Artificial Intelligence Accelerator (GAIA) for the development of open-source solutions to modernise the telecom network, with the help of AI and machine learning.

The Company will not only be hiring experts directly from the market but will also be acquihiring them, that is, through acquisition of talent alone. The acquisition of Niche AI, an AI-based computer vision startup, is part of the latter approach. Niche AI designs accurate and computationally light algorithms capable of solving computer-vision problems.

The companies (for acquihiring) are evaluated on the basis of various parameters, including size, primary competence, engineering capabilities, and cultural fit.

The plan is to have about 300 highly-qualified engineers in GAIA by the end of the year. Fifty per cent of this team will be working from India itself.

It has already recruited more than 75 engineers from Bangalore and Chennai. About 12 more will be added in the next few months.
