Will artificial intelligence (AI) result in eight million British citizens being rendered jobless? A report seems to clearly indicate that by 2029, AI will take over millions of jobs putting at risk jobs of secretaries, call-centre personnel, sales people and writers. According to experts, it will not be too long before doctors, dentists and even teachers will be replaced by AI!
A study carried out by the Institute for Public Policy Research found that almost 60 per cent of the jobs presently worked by human beings will fall prey to automation in the next five years or so.
Fortunately, right now, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, dentists, doctors and teachers may not be at immediate risk of losing their jobs, but they cannot hope to relax for too long.
In September last year, survey data had revealed that in certain sectors of Britain, more than 50 per cent of the jobs were at risk of being automated or replaced by robots in a matter of a decade or so. RS Components had examined data from PwC and ONS only to discover that at least 30 per cent of jobs in the country could be easily taken over by artificial intelligence (AI). At the time, the study had revealed that the catering industry was at maximum risk with more than 50 per cent of the jobs likely to be taken over by robots. That meant, over 24 lakh workers in the catering space alone were at risk of being rendered jobless by 2035.
The second ‘most at risk’ jobs were in the arts, entertainment and recreation industry where about 45 per cent of the jobs were likely to be automated or taken over by robots. That meant, over nine lakh people were at risk of being rendered jobless. Even in the manufacturing space, 45 per cent of the jobs were at risk from automation. Now, almost six months later, new studies seem to be only corroborating the same findings.
