A bonus of Rs 5,000 each has been granted to all the 87,000 employees of the State-owned Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) on the occasion of Diwali. The Government provided financial assistance to the tune of Rs 45 crore to MSRTC for the purpose of disbursing this bonus or ‘bhet’.

In another joyful announcement, around 17 lakh Maharashtra government employees will receive their November salary in October itself, before Diwali. Monthly pension of pensioners will also be paid at the same time. The State government decided to make the payments before the festival so that the employees and pensioners can celebrate well.

This move will also benefit all employees of zilla parishad-approved entities and education institutes, as well as agricultural and non-agricultural universities that operate on government grants.

Last month, employees of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST), as well as the teachers associated with these organisations were also promised a Diwali bonus of Rs 22,500 each.

For some time now, MSRTC has been facing financial issues with the number of passengers dwindling during the pandemic. While the expenses towards maintenance and all remained more or less unchanged, the revenue generation took a hit.

However, despite the weak financial situation, MSRTC decided to grant Diwali bonus to its employees. The amount will be deposited in the bank accounts of the employees.
