AI-driven hiring in India adds 51,000 more jobs than it displaces: Report

Artificial intelligence is generating more jobs in India than it is eliminating, according to a new report by Japanese brokerage Nomura.

The report estimates that AI-linked hiring across the country has outpaced job losses by over 51,000 roles. Instead of large-scale layoffs, Nomura says the technology is reshaping workforce demand and creating new opportunities in data, engineering, product, and support functions.

Analysts noted that most of the gains are coming from companies scaling AI tools internally and from IT-services firms building solutions for global clients. Roles in AI development, data labelling, prompt engineering, model training, and AI governance have seen the sharpest rise. At the same time, some entry-level and repetitive tasks have been automated, leading to job displacement in specific pockets.

The study highlights that India’s large talent pool and cost advantage have made it a hub for AI implementation work. Sectors like BFSI, healthcare, retail, and manufacturing are also ramping up hiring as they integrate AI into operations and customer service.

Nomura cautioned that the net positive trend doesn’t mean all workers are unaffected. It called for upskilling and reskilling to help employees move from roles vulnerable to automation into AI-adjacent jobs.

The report highlighted that “AI is not a pure job destroyer” in the country but “a job transformer.” It revealed that demand for tech talent with AI literacy will continue to grow over the next couple of years.

The findings add to a growing body of evidence that in emerging markets, AI adoption is currently driving net job creation rather than large-scale cuts.
