The Maharashtra government has officially enforced a policy making Marathi the mandatory language for communication in all government offices. The directive, issued on Monday, 3 February, 2025, applies to government, semi-government, and local body offices across the state.
All employees must now communicate in Marathi while handling official duties. Citizens can file complaints against employees who do not comply. Complaints must first be submitted to the department head. If no action is taken, an appeal can be made to the Marathi language committee of the state legislature.
The policy also mandates that all government applications, signboards, and advertisements be in Marathi. This move aligns with the Central government’s three-language policy, which includes English, Hindi, and the respective regional language in official communication.
The decision aims to promote and preserve Marathi as the primary administrative language. The government expects strict adherence from all employees, ensuring that Marathi remains the dominant medium in official transactions and public communication.
