Tawang MLA pushes for high altitude allowance for government employees

Cites extreme weather conditions and high cost of living in the 10,000-foot-high district

Tawang MLA Namgey Tsering has called for the implementation of a high altitude allowance for government employees working in Tawang district during the ongoing budget session of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

In his address to the Assembly, Tsering highlighted the significant challenges faced by government workers in Tawang, which sits at an elevation of 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) above sea level. The proposed allowance would provide additional financial compensation to employees working in this extreme environment, where they contend with low oxygen levels, increased physical exertion, and severe weather conditions.

Speaking to India Today, Tsering noted that Tawang experiences cold temperatures year-round, forcing residents to rely on Bukhari (wood-fired heaters) for approximately nine months of the year.

“Government employees posted in Tawang face extreme weather conditions and significant physical hardships. Given these circumstances, I strongly advocate for a high altitude allowance to support them,” Tsering stated.

The MLA also emphasised that Tawang has one of the highest costs of living in the region, creating financial strain for government workers stationed there.

During his address, Tsering provided updates on the progress of the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP), noting that several projects have already begun while others are still in development.

He also reiterated previously raised concerns regarding the Army’s use of sacred lands in Tawang without proper acquisition procedures, underscoring the area’s significant spiritual and religious importance to local communities.
