A viral Reddit post has ignited controversy, with a former Zomato employee claiming that the company abruptly terminated over 300 workers without notice. The ex-employee, who claims to gave been amongst those impacted, alleged that the decision was based on an “average lateness” of just 28 minutes over three months—and this after having performed well and having been backed by a strong track record.
According to the post, Zomato did not warn the employees of such a major move nor were they given a chance to explain or rectify their attendance issues. Instead, they were just abruptly terminated, leaving them shocked. Calling this “a cold termination”, the user criticised the company for treating employees as “disposable.”
The post quickly gained traction, sparking outrage over corporate ethics and job security in India’s startup sector. Many Reddit users shared similar stories, questioning the fairness of such abrupt dismissals. One commenter, claiming to be a current Zomato employee, described the rapidness with which the terminations happened, with Slack accounts being deactivated, access denied, and employees fired without being offered an opportunity to defend themselves.
A lawyer offered legal assistance, urging affected employees to take action and no take this lying down. Users are urging employees to “fight for the compensation” they deserve. Another former Zomato worker alleged they were fired for a vague reason, saying they were not made aware that login time discrepancies would tantamount to non-compliance.
Some users speculated that attendance was just an excuse to reduce the headcount as a cost-cutting measure.
