Etihad Airways to nurture in-house talent with ‘cadet pilot programme’

Etihad Airways is taking a bold step in talent development with the launch of its Employee Cadet Pilot Programme. The initiative allows existing employees an opportunity to train as pilots through a fully-funded programme.

With a workforce spanning 145 nationalities, Etihad aims to strengthen its pipeline of skilled pilots through internal development. This programme builds on the success of its UAE National Cadet Programme, which attracted over 2,000 applicants last year.

The two-year training programme is designed to equip candidates with world-class aviation skills. Training will take place in both the UAE and Spain, combining theoretical education, advanced flight simulations, and hands-on experience with cutting-edge aircraft technology.

The selection process spanned two months and tested candidates in English, mathematics, physics, and pilot aptitude. Additional psychometric evaluations and medical assessments ensured that only the most capable individuals were chosen. The announcement of the successful candidates was met with enthusiasm at Etihad’s annual employee- engagement forum, attended by 2,500 staff members.

The airline has awarded 10 scholarship spots to internal candidates from various departments, including cabin crew and flight dispatch. These individuals, representing eight different nationalities, will soon begin their intensive pilot training. Notably, seven of the selected candidates are women, underscoring Etihad’s commitment to gender diversity in aviation.

This marks the first time Etihad has launched a cadet pilot programme exclusively for employees. By investing in internal talent, the airline is fostering career mobility while ensuring a steady supply of skilled pilots for its expanding operations. The initiative not only enhances workforce capability but also proves that Etihad prioritises the professional development of it’s employees and inclusivity.
