That employment generation in Canada has been below expectations, with only 22,000 jobs being added in August, was known to all. But the extent of the crisis came to light with a video of a long queue of job seekers outside a restaurant going viral. What is interesting and concerning is that most of those waiting in line are Indian students!

If you are one of the lakhs of Indian students nurturing dreams of studying and working in Canada, you probably need to hit pause and rethink.

The viral video shows thousands of students waiting to be interviewed for the job of service staff / waiters at a restaurant called Tandoori Flame. Many of those waiting in the queue are students who have been in Canada for three years and have yet to find a suitable job.

Very recently a techie working for Infosys as an SAP specialist in Toronto, Canada had said that his salary of CAD 1,15,000, which is about Rs 70 lakh, was not enough to survive in the country. The video where he made that comment went viral on social media inviting mixed reactions and drawing attention to the high rent in the country. .

This job-queue video comes at a time when Canada is modifying its Temporary Foreign Worker Programme (TFW) to avoid misuse and fraud. The programme permits Canadian employers to hire foreign workers to fill temporary jobs in situations where suitable or qualified Canadians are not available to fill vacancies.
