After a layoff it is not unusual for employees to feel hatred towards their employers, especially when the process of termination has been an unpleasant one. Surprisingly, Harsh Pokharna, CEO, OKCredit, received appreciation and respect from the employees he laid off. Why? He spoke with each of the 70 impacted employees personally, explaining why this drastic measure had to be resorted to. There was transparency during the entire process.
He did not hide the fact that budget restrictions had forced the company to trim the workforce. He also admitted that the company had been wrong to hire too many employees too fast, which was one of the reasons why the layoffs had to happen. Owning the mistake on social media, Pokharna stated that the company was committed to handling the situation in the best way possible.
The affected employees were given help with outplacement, informed about available openings elsewhere, offered referrals and introduction letters, and supported through the transition.
The result was that 67 of the 70 laid-off employees were placed in new jobs during their notice period itself. The three who could not be placed were given additional two months’ salary.
Pokharna believes that employees who are hired with the promise of being treated like family should be treated like family members at the time of layoff too.
Employees everywhere expect a pleasant experience during their tenure with a company. No wonder Harsh Pokharna’s considerate approach to layoffs has won many hearts.
