A shadow over the rocket man: Elon Musk accused of sexual misconduct with employees

A Wall Street Journal report alleged a troubling pattern of sexual misconduct and a culture hostile to women at SpaceX, Musk's rocket company

Elon Musk, the tech titan known for his audacious ventures in electric cars and space travel, finds himself under fire. A bombshell report by the Wall Street Journal has levelled serious allegations of sexual misconduct and fostering a hostile work environment for women at SpaceX, one of Musk’s flagship companies.

Three women have come forward with disturbing claims. A former SpaceX intern alleges an inappropriate relationship with Musk that blossomed after she joined his executive team. Another female employee accuses Musk of similar misconduct. A third woman paints a picture of unwanted pressure, detailing how Musk allegedly pressured her to have children and then punished her professionally when she refused.

These accusations aren’t emerging from a vacuum. The report throws light on a pattern of behaviour, with other female employees expressing discomfort due to Musk’s advances. This isn’t the first time SpaceX has faced such scrutiny. In 2021, similar claims of a pervasive ‘culture of sexual harassment’ surfaced, with five former employees stepping forward.

Both Musk and SpaceX have vehemently denied the allegations. SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell has dismissed the report as a collection of ‘untruths’ and a ‘misleading narrative’.

However, the allegations cast a long shadow over Musk’s leadership and the work environment at his companies. The California civil rights agency is currently investigating SpaceX over claims of gender discrimination and retaliation against employees who raise concerns.

Only time will tell how these accusations will play out. But one thing is clear: Elon Musk, the visionary entrepreneur, now faces a battle for his reputation and the culture within his companies.
