Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has established a formidable presence in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, with employees dedicating an average of 87.1 learning hours in the fiscal year 2024 (FY24). This commitment is part of TCS’ broader strategy to enhance its capabilities in generative AI (GenAI).
The company has evidenced its involvement in over 200 GenAI projects and the acquisition of new deals worth $13.2 billion.
In an email to employees marking the beginning of FY2024-25, K Krithivasan, CEO, TCS, emphasised the company’s progress in building a world-class AI-ready workforce. The mail further highlighted the increase in average learning hours from 82.4 hours in FY23 to 87.1 hours in FY24. This growth spans all levels of the organisation, with senior employees also increasing their learning hours.
In FY24, TCS employees accumulated 51 million learning hours and acquired five million new competencies, aligning with the company’s expansion in GenAI projects. This generative AI pipeline has doubled to $900 million, reflecting TCS’s strategic investments and anticipated industry advancements in FY25.
The mail further revealed that junior male employees led the learning effort with an average of 126 hours, while their female counterparts averaged 115 hours. Middle-level employees averaged 57 hours for males and 51 hours for females, and senior employees recorded 49 hours for males and 54 hours for females.
TCS’s strategy extends beyond new hires, with a strong emphasis on upskilling and cross-skilling its existing workforce. In FY24, 33 per cent of job placements were achieved through internal talent development, fostering significant growth opportunities within the company.
While there has been a slight increase in employees over 50, the proportion of younger employees under 30 has decreased from 59 per cent in FY22 to 50.3% in FY24. Despite this demographic shift, TCS continues to emphasise comprehensive learning, resulting in nearly five million new competencies gained by its workforce.
