Focus Edumatics, a US-based firm with operations in Coimbatore, has come under scrutiny after employees claimed they were abruptly laid off without prior notice. Workers from the company gathered at the district collectorate on Monday, 27 January, submitting a petition to District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati.
The petitioners reported that on Saturday night, 25 January, they received an email informing them of their termination. The email indicated that over a thousand employees, ranging from field-level staff to senior officials, were laid off as the company ceased operations. The firm, which had offices in RS Puram and Sungam, has since become unreachable, leaving the affected workers in the lurch.
The affected workers appealed for assistance in securing their pending wages and experience certificates. Many had served the company for over two years and emphasised that the relieving orders were essential for pursuing other job opportunities.
According to the petition, the email falsely stated that the employees had been absconding. This claim, they argued, added to the difficulties they faced in justifying their termination to prospective employers. The workers also reported that the layoffs extended beyond Coimbatore, with an estimated 3,000 employees across India allegedly impacted by the shutdown.
The district collector has directed the city police to investigate the matter. Authorities are expected to look into the company’s operations, the legality of the layoffs, and the claims of unpaid dues.
This incident has raised questions about the firm’s accountability and its sudden shutdown. Workers are now urging authorities to act swiftly, ensuring they receive their dues and necessary documentation to mitigate the challenges of finding new employment. As investigations unfold, the focus remains on bringing justice to the affected employees and holding the company accountable for its actions.
