Makarand Khatavkar is stepping down as the group head-HR, Kotak Mahindra Bank — a role that he took on over four years back, in November 2014. Presently, he is serving his notice period till end of January, 2019. According to industry sources, he will move to New York to follow his long-time passion of providing executive coaching, and will eventually start his own coaching practice in India. However, Khatavkar was not available for any comment.

Of the over 33 years that he has spent in the HR function, Khatavkar has contributed 20 years of service to the BFSI sector alone.

Prior to joining Kotak Mahindra, Khatavkar was the MD and head-HR at Deutsche Bank for over a decade. There, he lead the HR function for global markets, investment banking, wholesale banking, retail banking, equities, private banking, asset management and the CIB (corporate and investment banking) centre in India.

In his over three-decade long career, Khatavkar has also worked with many other organisations, such as DSP Merril Lynch as SVP and head-HR for three years and JM Morgan Stanley as executive director and head-HR for over four years.

Being an associate certified coach recognised by the International Coach Federation, Khatavkar has also undergone training at Harvard. He has been practising executive coaching both inside and outside Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Having obtained his master’s in personnel management and industrial relations and human resources from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, he also completed a Phd programme in organisational life cycles and leadership effectiveness from the same institution.
