After having worked with Tata Global Beverages (TGB) as director- global HR for three years, Nitin Nahata is shifting gears to join a startup, Udaan.com.

The startup, with its headquarters in Bengaluru, the Silicon Valley of India, will see Nahata continuing to work in the HR domain.

Udaan.com is a network-centric B2B trade platform, designed specifically for small and medium businesses in India. It brings traders, wholesalers, retailers and manufacturers in India onto a single platform.

HRKatha spoke to an elated Nahata and asked him what motivated him to take this step. After all, leaving a company under the prestigious Tata umbrella must not have been easy.

“Today, startups provide an exciting opportunity to individuals. Moreover, without starting your own entrepreneurial venture, you can have your skin in the game through stock options,” says Nahata.

He adds, “From a career perspective, I was looking for an opportunity which would leverage my entrepreneurial streak and yet give me an opportunity to do something more innovative and unconventional in the field of HR.”

Nahata chose Udaan because it is fairly big in size, has great business fundamentals and a robust growth model. “When I was looking at such companies, Udaan was amongst the top. I am quite happy to be part of the Udaan family,” says Nahata cheerfully.

After obtaining a postgraduate degree in human resource management from TISS, Nahata started his career with Wipro e-Peripherals. Thereafter, he spent five years in the banking industry, Standard Chartered Bank and HSBC being his employers then.

The TGB experience has been a fulfilling one for him. He did a lot of exciting work there that many professionals would aspire to even now. His new employer, Udaan, is the reason for him to shift base from Mumbai to Bengaluru.
