India’s unemployment rate saw a marginal uptick in the April-June quarter, driven largely by stress in rural areas, even as cities reported some relief, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released by the National Statistics Office.

For persons aged 15 years and above, the unemployment rate stood at 5.2 per cent in April 2026, up from 5.1 per cent in March 2026 and the same month last year. This marks a six-month high.

The rise was entirely led by rural India. Rural unemployment climbed to 4.6 per cent in April from 4.3 per cent in March. In contrast, urban joblessness eased to 6.6 per cent from 6.8 per cent, hitting its lowest level in 12 months. Urban women saw the sharpest improvement, with the rate falling to 8.5 per cent from 9.0 per cent, while urban men’s unemployment also dipped to 5.9 per cent.

At the national level, women continued to face tougher conditions. Overall female unemployment rose to 5.4 per cent from 5.3 per cent in March. Male unemployment inched up to 5.1 per cent from 5.0 per cent.

The Labour Force Participation Rate for the 15+ age group slipped to 55 per cent in April from 55.4 per cent in March. Rural LFPR was 57.5 per cent and urban was 50.1 per cent. Female participation moderated to an eight-month low of 33.9 per cent, with urban female LFPR at 25.0 per cent compared to 75.2 per cent for men.

The Worker Population Ratio also declined to 52.2 per cent from 52.6 per cent. Rural WPR stood at 54.9 per cent and urban at 46.8 per cent. For rural men it was 74.5 per cent, while for rural women it was 36.5 per cent. In urban areas, WPR among women was 22.9 per cent versus 70.7 per cent for men.

Officials noted that while headline unemployment rose, urban labour markets showed stability. The PLFS monthly bulletin covered 3,74,243 persons across the country.

Overall, the data points to broad stability in India’s job market with only marginal month-on-month movements, even as rural distress and lower participation weighed on the headline numbers.
