Deel’s Indian footprint grows as global HR and payroll platform expands

With over 12 per cent of its global workforce based in India, Deel strengthens its position in the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem

Deel, the leading global HR and payroll platform valued at $12 billion, has continued to expand its presence in India, solidifying its position in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. In the past year, Deel’s Indian team has grown by an impressive 45 per cent, with over 12 per cent of its global workforce now operating from India across various functions including sales, partnerships, finance, engineering, and support.

Fully remote and distributed across more than 20 cities, Deel’s expansion in India underscores its commitment to supporting Indian businesses in managing international teams. India’s vibrant startup ecosystem, the third largest in the world with over 140,800 active startups, is driving a surge in demand for streamlined global workforce solutions. As more Indian companies venture into overseas markets, Deel offers a comprehensive platform that simplifies the complex processes of onboarding, managing, and paying international teams.

“India’s dynamic business environment and the global ambitions of its startups present an exciting opportunity,” said Mark Samlal, general manager, Asia-Pacific region, Deel and founder, PayGroup. “Our AI-powered platform addresses the unique challenges Indian businesses face as they expand internationally, providing the tools they need to build, manage, and pay world-class teams across borders.”

Deel’s expansion in India was further bolstered by its acquisition of PayGroup in 2022, a leading payroll and human capital management firm in the Asia-Pacific region. This acquisition brought Deel two decades of experience in the Indian market, enhancing its capabilities to serve local businesses. PayGroup’s clients in India include Clariant, Watlow, Albonair, and HDFC Life Insurance, among others.

Globally, Deel serves over 35,000 organisations, including industry leaders such as BCG, Nike, Forever21, and Reddit. In India, its customers include CleverTap, Xebia, and Celebal Tech, as well as global players with a strong presence in India such as TerraPay.

With a valuation of $12 billion and over $650 million in funding, Deel has achieved remarkable growth. It has been profitable since 2022 and recently reported annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $500 million. Deel has also expanded through strategic acquisitions, enhancing its services for managing global teams. This year, Deel acquired three companies: PaySpace in Africa, Zavvy in Germany, and Hofy in the UK. These acquisitions have deepened Deel’s payroll infrastructure, enabled people development tools through Deel Engage, and expanded IT services with Deel IT.

“Deel started with a focus on global talent solutions and payroll, but we’ve continuously evolved by listening to our customers and adding new products to address pain points in managing global teams,” added Samlal. “Our acquisitions ensure Deel is the most comprehensive HR and payroll solution, offering EOR, payroll, contractor management, and now IT services in one unified, AI-enabled platform.”

Deel’s continued expansion in India reflects the growing need for efficient, scalable solutions that help businesses manage the complexities of a global workforce while remaining compliant and competitive in the international market.
