Anthropic has confirmed plans to set up its own chip-design team to support the growing demand for its Claude AI models. The move comes amid a global shortage of advanced chips needed to power artificial intelligence systems. The company is recruiting engineers with expertise across hardware and software to co-design chips and AI models that can run faster and more efficiently at scale.
This step is part of Anthropic’s broader multi-chip strategy. While it already works with AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD to access computing hardware, the startup sees in-house design as critical to scaling operations. Reports earlier suggested Anthropic was exploring partnerships, including with Samsung, to support chip development.
Designing advanced AI chips is a costly process, often requiring investments of around half a billion dollars, along with highly skilled engineers and defect-free manufacturing. Anthropic has not yet shared a timeline or clarified whether it will handle manufacturing itself.
The decision reflects the competitive race among AI companies to secure infrastructure and reduce dependency on external suppliers. With demand for Claude rising, Anthropic is positioning itself to control more of its technology stack, ensuring greater agility and efficiency in delivering AI services to customers.
