Martin Bally, vice president-information technology, Campbell Soup Company has reportedly been put on leave following allegations that he made racist remarks against Indians. Not only did he imply that Indian employees were idiots and that he hated working with them, but also that the Campbell Soup brand was meant for poor customers and was of poor quality. The company has reportedly stated that it is intolerant towards such language that goes against its values.
Allegations against the senior executive, of making fun of Indian workers, are being investigated.
A lawsuit has been filed by Robert Garza, an ex-employee who was reportedly terminated when he complained about Bally.
Garza, had joined Campbell as a cybersecurity analyst in September 2024. When he met Bally about two months later to discuss his salary, Bally apparently passed negative comments regarding the brand itself. He stated that he thought Campbell Soup Company produced extremely processed food targeted at poor people; and that he himself was wary of buying its ‘unhealthy’ products. During that meeting he also expressed his dislike for Indian employees and called them ‘idiots’.
When Garza later escalated this to his manager, the latter did not encourage him to approach the HR. In fact, he was suddenly fired not long after. An audio recording of the meeting (supposedly leaked) reveals how Bally insulted Indian co-workers by saying that they know nothing and were incapable of thinking for themselves.
The American food company, meanwhile, has defended its products saying it makes its food with safe and very high-quality ingredients and claimed that the recording was inaccurate and misleading.
