As is the usual practice every holiday season, Amazon is hiring 2.5 lakh full-time, part-time and seasonal workers for the smooth functioning of its customer-fulfilment and transportation operations across the US. Clearly, the company does not expect any fall in demand.
To attract job seekers, Amazon has increased its hourly pay by $1.50. For those working in its warehouses and transportation network, that is, about eight lakh people, the hourly pay may even cross $22 per hour.
The seasonal workers earn a minimum of $18 an hour in addition to healthcare benefits from the day of joining.
Many workers are regulars when it comes to seasonal roles,. In fact, a third of the seasonal workers come back to take up jobs during the holiday peak rush.
Full-time employees enjoy healthcare benefits right from the day of joining and access to education programmes where their tuition fee is pre-paid if they wish to pursue college degrees or certifications.
The company is infusing about $2.2 billion into the addition pay for workers in its fulfillment centres and transportation networks. As a result, the average total pay crosses $29 per hour, including healthcare.
Seasonal workers who choose to stay on with Amazon can expect an average pay hike of 15 per cent over the first three years of their association with the e-commerce company.
Target is also hiring about one lakh seasonal workers and is offering the existing employees the opportunity to earn by doing extra hours.
