80% Wipro staff to be promoted by December

Wipro is gearing to give promotions to 80 per cent of its workforce over the next three months, as part of its ‘employee interventions’. The Indian IT services company also plans to continue hiring. It has already taken on about 20,000 new people in the last two quarters.

The increments will be in line with what was doled out last year, which means the high performers will be rewarded. The Company paid 100 per cent variable pay to its employees in the second quarter.

The hikes and promotions are the Company’s way of acknowledging the employees’ hard work and resilience through the pandemic without which Wipro could not have ensured seamless business continuity.

The H1B visa limitations imposed by the US have not had much of an impact on the Company from a business perspective. Almost 70 per cent of its workforce in the US comprises locals.

The Company is now focussing on the increment cycle of its junior employees. While earlier, in April, Wipro had stalled promotions and deferred hikes due to the uncertainties brought on by the pandemic, in September it had announced its intention to reward high performers. Under normal circumstances, the increments would have been given out in June.

The multinational IT company has revealed its ‘robust’ hiring plans for the second half of the fiscal, which will comprise both freshers and laterals in the third and fourth quarters. The hiring will take place across India, Europe and the US, with focus on artificial intelligence (AI), digital, and internet of things (IoT).
