Recognising the pressing need to address long-standing financial obligations, the Himachal Pradesh government has made a significant announcement. The government announced the clearance of pension arrears, which has been a matter of concern for many senior citizens in the state.
The decision was made during the 78th Independence Day celebrations in Himachal Pradesh. During the celebrations, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu underscored the government’s commitment to improve the state’s financial health, with a particular emphasis on the welfare of pensioners.
The government has declared that all arrears owed to pensioners and family pensioners aged 75 and above would be cleared within the current financial year. This move is a part of the state government’s broader strategy to bring fiscal stability and ensure that the state fulfils its obligations to its retired employees, many of whom rely heavily on these payments for their livelihood. Furthermore, it reflects a deep understanding of the financial hardships faced by older pensioners, who have been waiting for these dues amidst rising living costs.
Sukhu further emphasised that while significant progress has been made in stabilising the state’s finances, much work remains to be done. He acknowledged that the financial challenges inherited from the previous administration have placed an additional burden on the state’s resources. However, he assured the public that his government is committed to overcoming these challenges through careful fiscal management and policy reforms aimed at generating additional revenue.
He also outlined ongoing efforts to improve public services, including healthcare, employment opportunities and support for disaster-affected families.
This announcement was met with appreciation from pensioners and their families, who have long awaited the resolution of this issue. The commitment to clear arrears within the financial year demonstrates the government’s determination to address long-standing financial challenges and ensure that those who have served the state are not left behind in its journey toward economic stability.
