An employee’s post on Reddit about being fined by his boss has caught the attention of netizens. The said employee, who often stays back and works late, usually turns off the lights and AC before heading home. However, one night he forgot to turn the AC off for which his boss imposed a fine after scolding him on a group message. The employee was told that Rs 500 would be cut from his salary for this oversight on his part!

The employee admits to feeling belittled in the presence of co-workers and is disappointed that the boss had made him come across as a careless and irresponsible person. He had, after all, been honest and owned up to the mistake when he could have kept quiet. He also draws attention to the fact that although it wasn’t his job to switch off the lights and AC every night, he had been diligently doing it. Yet, he had to pay a penalty for forgetting to do so on just one occasion. He had not been irresponsible but just human, and human beings can forget things sometimes.

Most social-media users agreed with the employee who stated that shutting down the office wasn’t his duty nor does the office policy say anything to that effect. However, he had been acting like a responsible employee and turning the lights and AC off while leaving for the day, only to end up paying a fine for one lapse. A simple warning would have been enough, but the employee had to face a pay cut for being honest.

Many Reddit users pointed out that office management wasn’t an employee’s responsibility, while others urged the employee to quit such a toxic workplace.
