In a fresh layoff round, Microsoft is letting go four per cent of its 2.28 lakh- strong global team. That means about 9,000 jobs will be cut. Last week, there had been news of Microsoft planning to cut jobs in the Xbox division but the exact number of people that will be let go wasn’t disclosed at the time. However, media reports expected the round of layoffs to be the largest in the past year and a half.
Interestingly, these cuts are happening at a time when the tech firm is posting profits.
The company is calling these cuts a part of organisational changes that cannot be avoided in a bid to ensure success in a “dynamic marketplace”. The cuts will affect several departments and regions. Layoffs happened earlier in January, followed by 6000 cuts in May and then over 300 in June too as part of a restructuring exercise.
Till now, the year 2025 has reportedly witnessed more than 15,000 job cuts at Microsoft. The software giant had also started to outsource some functions recently in an attempt to bring down operational costs even while focusing more on investing in artificial intelligence (AI).
