A workplace notice outlining strict vacation restrictions during peak work periods has sparked widespread backlash online. The policy, which prohibits not only vacation days but also sick leave from 25 November 31 December, has left many social-media users outraged.
The contentious notice stated that no exceptions would be made as the company required “all hands on deck” for its busiest season.
The photo of the notice, shared on Reddit, quickly went viral. Users criticised the lack of empathy and flexibility, with one sarcastically commenting, “If you die, you have to inform management three days prior.” Others shared similar anecdotes of workplace policies that prioritise profits over employee well-being.
One Reddit user described a company where summer vacation was completely off-limits, leading to overworked and underpaid staff. They noted that the employer couldn’t understand why employees kept quitting, blaming it on a supposed lack of work ethic.
In contrast, some users highlighted businesses that prioritise employee welfare. One commenter praised a local coffee shop that shuts down every January, giving employees a fully-paid month off to recharge and feel appreciated.
Others offered creative responses to the strict policy. “Call in with something highly contagious and insist on meeting management in person to make sure it’s okay,” quipped a user.
The post underscores ongoing frustrations about rigid corporate policies that disregard employees’ personal needs, especially during peak seasons. It also reignites the debate about balancing productivity with compassion in workplace management.
