KPMG has rolled out an internal dashboard to measure how frequently employees use artificial intelligence tools, as part of a broader push to embed AI into everyday work. The system, introduced across its US advisory division, sets a 75 per cent usage target for many employees and allows individuals to track their performance against internal benchmarks.

The dashboard aggregates activity across both in-house and external platforms, including tools such as Microsoft 365 Copilot. Employees can view their usage patterns, compare them with peers, and assess how closely they align with company expectations. The initiative covers roughly 10,000 employees and reflects a shift towards treating AI adoption as a measurable performance factor.

The move comes as firms increasingly look to quantify returns on AI investments. KPMG reports that a large majority of its workforce already uses AI tools on a weekly basis. The company positions frequent usage as a driver of better output, reduced stress, and more time for higher-value work.

The rollout follows recent workforce reductions in the advisory business, highlighting growing pressure on consulting firms to boost productivity while investing in emerging technologies. Leadership has signalled that AI is no longer optional, but central to employee effectiveness.

Internally, employees have access to a range of AI systems, including KPMG’s aIQ Chat platform, which connects to models such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, as well as its Digital Gateway platform for specialised tasks.

However, the tracking system has drawn criticism from some employees, who question whether usage metrics accurately reflect meaningful work. Concerns include the ease of inflating activity, gaps in tracking certain advanced tools, and the risk of reducing AI adoption to a superficial compliance metric.

KPMG maintains that the dashboard is intended to encourage adoption rather than enforce it. The firm has also introduced incentive programmes and research collaborations to promote more effective and thoughtful use of AI across its workforce.
