Karnataka is facing a major recruitment crisis. Government hiring has stalled, leaving nearly 2.8 lakh posts vacant across departments. This has triggered repeated protests by job aspirants, who are demanding immediate action and clarity on age eligibility.
On 24 February, hundreds of students and job seekers gathered in Dharwad, blocking key roads and disrupting traffic. The protest was led by groups such as the All Karnataka State Students Association (AKSSA) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Demonstrators issued a one-week ultimatum to the state government to release a recruitment calendar for 56,000 posts, warning of a larger march to Bengaluru if demands are ignored.
The freeze stems from legal and procedural hurdles. Recruitment was paused while awaiting the Justice Nagamohan Das Commission report on Scheduled Caste internal reservations. The subsequent SC Sub-Classification Bill, 2025, was returned by the Governor for clarification, further delaying hiring. Past scandals in the Karnataka Public Service Commission and alleged irregularities in police recruitment have also slowed decision-making.
Vacancies are most severe in three departments: school education (80,000 posts), health (37,000), and home (28,000). The impact is visible—schools struggle with teacher shortages, health centres operate with minimal staff, and police stations lack full-time inspectors, weakening law and order. Citizens increasingly face delays and inefficiency in basic services.
While the government has completed 40,000 recruitments and approved a one-time five-year age relaxation, the backlog remains huge. Job seekers argue that without a clear, time-bound hiring plan, frustration will only grow. The situation highlights the urgent need for legal clarity, phased recruitment, and transparent communication to restore confidence among Karnataka’s unemployed youth.
