Tapas Kumar Pattanayak, who is presently executive director (HR), Indian Oil, will be taking on the role of human resource director, National Aluminium Company (NALCO).

Pattanayak’s candidature—for this role at the public-sector unit under the Ministry of Mines—was suggested by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB).

An alumnus of Utkal University where he studied personnel management and industrial relations, and also read law, Pattanayak served as personnel officer at Hindustan Copper for two years in the initial years of his career.

As HR director, NALCO, Pattanayak will lead staff management in addition to the human resources strategy of the company. Reporting directly to the chairman and managing director, he will also be handling industrial relations.

In this role, Tapas Kumar Pattanayak will be expected to formulate the human resource policy for the ‘Navaratna’ business and contribute significantly to its expansion and management. This appointment will also make him a member of the board of directors, NALCO.

The selection panel of PESB interviewed 11 other candidates for this post earlier this month, from the Steel Authority of India (SAIL), National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL), Indian Oil (IOC), National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), Rural Electrification Corporation (REC), and National Textile Corporation (NTCL).

Founded in 1981, the Indian government owns about 51.28 per cent of NALCO’s equity capital.
