How Cardiff, Durham job cuts will affect UK’s healthcare system

Although these cuts are part of cost-cutting measures, they are expected to lead to the closure of nursing courses

Many courses in Cardiff University have been shortlisted for closure. About 400 full-time jobs are being eliminated too. Why? Due to shortage of funds. While Cardiff University is facing a deficit of £30 million, Durham University is also embracing cost cuts to save about £20 million over a period of two years.

Durham has revealed intentions to cut 200 roles to achieve sustainability and financial stability.

Cardiff’s jobs cuts have been triggered by a fall in the number of applications from international students and the spike in operational expenses. With its budgetary challenges increasing daily, the University has resorted to trimming its staff.

Reports say that the trimming of the staff at Cardiff will affect the number of nurses available to the healthcare system in Wales. This is because the job cuts will primarily impact the courses being offered in nursing in addition to ancient history and religion, music, modern languages and theology. The Welsh hospitals are also short of at least 2000 nurses, and therefore, the closure of the nursing course does not augur well for the healthcare system.

However, Cardiff University maintains that these cuts have only been proposed and nothing has been finalised yet. Discussions are on with all stakeholders and the University assures that there would be no immediate adverse impact. Also, the programmes for 2025-26 will not be affected and applications for the upcoming academic year will not be turned away either.
