Gujarat government hikes daily allowance for fixed-pay employees

The Government of Gujarat has announced a significant hike in the daily allowance for fixed-pay employees across state government offices. This move aims to offer better financial support to contract-based workers who are appointed under the state’s fixed-salary policy.

Under the new guidelines, employees working more than six hours but less than twelve hours will now receive a daily allowance of Rs 200, up from the earlier Rs 120. For those clocking over twelve hours, the allowance has been hiked from Rs 240 to Rs 400.

The revision also includes an update to travel reimbursements. Fixed-pay employees will now be eligible to claim travel allowance equivalent to ticket fares of Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) buses or Indian Railways, matching the benefits provided to regular employees of the state government. The Finance Department has implemented this under it’s resolution from 2006. This policy applies to Class III and Class IV employees appointed on a five-year fixed-pay basis. The revised allowances come as part of ongoing amendments to the service conditions of these contract workers.

This financial revision underscores the government’s efforts to bridge the gap between contract-based and regular employees. It recognises the increasing workload of fixed-pay staff and aims to offer compensation that reflects their hours of work and the nature of their duties.

The decision is expected to benefit a large section of government employees across various departments, enhancing their morale and ensuring fairer compensation practices. In all likelihood, the revised allowances will be implemented across all applicable cadres in the near future, following the notification issued by the Finance Department.
