As Diwali approaches, organisations and governments across India are rolling out bonuses and pay hikes, underscoring the role of employee welfare in workforce engagement.

The Union Cabinet has approved a three per cent hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for Central government employees and pensioners, raising rates from 60 per cent to 63 per cent of basic pay and pension. Effective retrospectively from 1 July, 2026, the move benefits 48 lakh employees and 68 lakh pensioners, with an annual cost of Rs 10,016 crore. Employees under older pay commissions also see higher increases, ranging from 7 to 14 percentage points.

In Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a Rs 33,000 Diwali bonus for over 93,000 employees, including civic staff, teachers, health volunteers and helpers. This is Rs 2,000 higher than last year’s payout, reflecting rising recognition of frontline contributions.

The Goa government has sanctioned a bonus equal to 30 days’ emoluments, capped at Rs 6,908, for eligible state employees. Payments will be made electronically by 6 November, extending also to staff of government funded autonomous bodies.

Meanwhile, in Rajasthan, preparations are underway to raise DA by 3 per cen in line with the Centre, alongside a Diwali bonus for nearly 8 lakh employees and 5.44 lakh pensioners, say media reports.

In the private sector, festive rewards have taken a striking turn. MK Bhatia, chairman, MITS Group, gifted four Kia Sonet SUVs to loyal, high performing employees of Mits Healthcare. The company has made car gifting an annual tradition, rewarding long term commitment and performance.

These varied gestures — from structured allowances to symbolic rewards — highlight how organisations use festive benefits to reinforce morale, loyalty and inclusion. Whether through financial relief or recognition, Diwali bonuses remain a powerful tool for strengthening the employee employer bond.
