    Google to slow down hiring

    Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google, has conveyed to the employees that the Company will slow down hiring for the remaining part of the year.

    Pichai clarified that hiring will not be entirely frozen. In alignment with the Company’s long-term goals, techies and engineers will continue to be hired along with other critical talent, but the pace will be considerably reduced amidst the uncertain economic environment. Instead, the Company will now allocate resources to areas of higher priority.

    As per the memo, a copy of which was obtained by The Verge, Pichai has called upon the employees to be “more entrepreneurial” and work with “greater urgency, sharper focus, and more hunger than we’ve shown on sunnier days.”

    Explaining the fact that the Company added almost 10,000 employees in the second quarter, Pichai said that these big hiring numbers were reflective of the opportunities that exist despite the uncertainty.

    Googlers were told to focus on Google’s mission of organising the “world’s information” and making it “universally accessible and useful”. In the memo, Pichai drew attention to the fact that Google can only achieve its mission by focussing on “knowledge and computing”, which also helps it decide its areas of investment, including Cloud, YouTube, Search, Platforms and Hardware and the associated teams and artificial intelligence.

    Staff have been encouraged to stick to Google’s culture of seeing challenges as opportunities instead of hurdles and be more entrepreneurial.

    Employees have been assured of more ways of engagement and idea sharing.
