The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) of Britain has published the ‘Get Britain Working’ white paper comprising various reforms pertaining to employment support aimed at achieving 80 per cent employment rate.
The publication lays down a different model of employment support system which will offer a solution to the reasons that lead to unemployment and joblessness. The approach rides on an investment of about £240 million. The objective is to bring over two million people back into the active workforce.
It has been realised that the need of the hour is to get people working and on jobs. The white paper seeks to ensure that everyone, irrespective of their age, rank, health and so on is able to earn a livelihood.
Joblessness in Britain has reached almost 1.5 million, with more than nine million people economically inactive. Long-term sickness has pushed 2.8 million people out of the workforce, which is one of the primary reasons for the increase in the number of jobless people since the onset of the pandemic.
Plans have been outlined to expand mental-health support and tackle obesity.
Job centres are likely to be replaced by a new National Jobs and Careers Service. It is also suggested that more employment and training opportunities be provided for the youth under the Youth Guarantee initiative to make them employable. While mayors will be authorised to create their own employment plans, measures will be taken to support employers to hire people with disabilities and health conditions.
