E-commerce giant Flipkart has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D). This collaboration aims to leverage cutting-edge research to enhance personalised recommendations for Flipkart’s customers.
The MoU establishes a framework for joint research focused on developing user personas. These personas will be data-driven segments that capture users’ shopping behaviours, demographics, and potentially even the behaviour of surrounding users. This granular understanding will be used to tailor product recommendations to individual preferences.
Technically, the partnership will explore the creation of a general-purpose user activity graph. This graph will leverage state-of-the-art Graph Neural Network (GNN) techniques to model user interactions and preferences. The research aspires to overcome limitations of existing persona creation tools and extract insights from the user activity graph to build a more nuanced understanding of individual customer profiles.
Flipkart’s commitment to fostering academic partnerships is evident in this collaboration. By providing research grants and market insights to FITT, Flipkart fuels industry-focused research that tackles crucial challenges in e-commerce. Additionally, the partnership encompasses joint seminars, conference travel grants, and company-sponsored research projects aligned with mutual interests.
“This collaboration,” remarked Mayur Datar, Flipkart’s Chief Data Scientist, “represents our commitment to innovation and superior customer experiences. By leveraging user personas, we aim to elevate the online shopping journey through personalised recommendations. This partnership fosters collaboration between academicians and industry leaders, tackling real-world problems and transforming the e-commerce landscape.”
IIT Delhi officials echoed this sentiment. Prof. Preeti Ranjan Panda, Dean of Corporate Relations, emphasised the potential for this collaboration to significantly advance e-commerce technologies, ultimately enhancing customer engagement strategies. Prof. Sayan Ranu, of the Computer Science and Engineering Department, highlighted the importance of translating research into tangible solutions. He expressed his hope that the partnership will not only refine recommendation models but also contribute to the development of robust machine learning models capable of handling the complexities of large-scale real-world data.
Flipkart’s ongoing engagement with leading academic institutions reflects its commitment to developing indigenous solutions tailored to the unique challenges of the Indian market. This latest partnership with IIT Delhi builds upon previous collaborations with IIT Bombay and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
