Akasa Air has launched Akasa SkyCadet, a pilot training programme aimed at preparing the next generation of commercial pilots for India’s rapidly expanding aviation sector. The initiative is designed to create a structured pathway for aspiring pilots through comprehensive aviation education, flight training and airline-focused operational readiness.

Developed in partnership with approved Flight Training Organisations, Skynex Aero and Dunes Aviation Academy, the programme aligns with the regulations of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) as well as Akasa Air’s operational standards.

The launch comes at a time when India’s aviation industry is witnessing unprecedented growth. Indian carriers collectively have around 1,700 aircraft on order, while the country’s commercial fleet is expected to nearly triple by 2035. Industry estimates indicate that India currently has between 12,000 and 15,000 commercial pilots, but the demand is projected to rise sharply over the next decade. By 2035, the country is expected to require approximately 35,000 pilots, with India and South Asia together needing nearly 45,000 new pilots over the next 20 years.

The Akasa SkyCadet programme will follow a three-stage training model. The first phase, Ground School, will equip cadets with theoretical knowledge covering aviation regulations, navigation, meteorology, aircraft systems and human performance. This will be followed by Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) Flight Training, which will include dual and solo flying exercises, instrument flying and cross-country operations in line with DGCA and International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards.

The final phase will involve Type Rating training on the Boeing 737 MAX, providing cadets with simulator-based and aircraft systems training to prepare them for commercial jet operations.

Commenting on the launch, Belson Coutinho, co-founder and chief operating officer, Akasa Air, said, “At Akasa Air, we have always believed that our people will be the cornerstone of our success. The Akasa SkyCadet Programme reflects our commitment to investing in talent from the grassroots level and creating structured pathways for aspiring pilots to build meaningful careers in aviation. Beyond technical capability, the programme is designed to instil a strong culture of safety, operational excellence, discipline, and service orientation – the values that define Akasa Air.”

The airline said the programme reflects its focus on long-term talent development and creating career opportunities for aspiring pilots. While the SkyCadet initiative is targeted at fresh entrants to the profession, Akasa Air added that it will continue recruiting CPL holders and Boeing 737 type-rated pilots to support its expanding fleet and network operations.
