EY to set aside $100 million in bonuses for employees with strong people skills

The move reflects a growing shift in how organisations are defining and rewarding talent as AI becomes more embedded in everyday work

Ernst & Young (EY) plans to allocate $100 million in bonuses to employees who demonstrate skills that remain critical as artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes professional services. The firm will also recognise employees for effective adoption and use of technology.

The Big Four firm said the additional rewards will recognise capabilities such as leadership, judgement, business acumen, collaboration and adaptability.

The move reflects a growing shift in how organisations are defining and rewarding talent as AI becomes more embedded in everyday work. While technical capabilities and AI adoption are becoming increasingly important, EY is placing greater emphasis on skills that rely on human judgement, collaboration and interaction.

The investment is part of EY’s broader workforce strategy as the firm prepares for a technology-led working environment where human capabilities continue to play a central role.

Reportedly, as per a statement from Dante D’Egidio, EY Americas CEO and US managing partner, the firm believes the pace and complexity of change in the industry require stronger leadership. He said the investment is intended to recognise the skills and behaviours needed to lead the profession and serve clients effectively.

The bonus programme comes amid growing concerns over the impact of AI on employment. Automation is expected to affect roles involving repetitive and routine work, particularly some entry-level positions. At the same time, organisations are increasingly looking for employees who can use AI tools to improve productivity and work alongside emerging technologies.

EY’s approach places human capabilities alongside technology adoption in its reward strategy. Employees who can lead teams, make decisions in complex situations, collaborate effectively and adapt to changing business requirements are set to receive greater recognition.

The initiative could also influence how professional-services firms assess employee performance. As AI takes over more routine tasks, attributes such as judgement, relationship-building, leadership and adaptability could become more important factors in career progression and compensation.

With the $100 million investment, EY is linking rewards to both technology adoption and the human capabilities that remain central to decision-making, client relationships and leadership.
