Amazon is gearing up for a massive expansion of its delivery network In India, with plans to bring faster and more efficient services to thousands of small towns and rural areas. The e-commerce giant announced this week that it will extend its reach to over 13,000 zip codes by the end of 2026, aiming to significantly reduce delivery times and improve accessibility across less urbanised regions.
As part of this multi-billion dollar initiative, Amazon intends to triple its current delivery infrastructure. This includes increasing its rural delivery network to more than 200 delivery stations. The expansion is also expected to generate over one lakh new opportunities.
These will range from full-time and part-time roles to flexible driving positions, offering both stable employment and gig-based earning options to individuals in underserved locations.
The move is strategically aligned with Amazon’s goal to reduce reliance on third-party carriers. By controlling more of its own logistics chain, the company aims to keep a control over delivery costs. This is even more important to focus on amid rising operational expenses and global trade uncertainties.
This expansion comes just ahead of Amazon’s highly anticipated Prime Day sale in July, indicating that the company is preparing for a hike in demand. More efficient last-mile logistics in rural regions may also help boost sales from small-town customers who have traditionally faced longer delivery windows.
In addition to consumer benefits, Amazon is opening doors for small businesses through its Hub Delivery programme. This initiative allows local businesses to act as delivery partners, enabling them to distribute products more widely and tap into Amazon’s vast customer base.
