Sanitary staff employed by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and gram panchayats and municipalities across Telangana will enjoy a Rs 1,000 hike in salary per month.

The move will benefit over one lakh sanitation workers across the State, who will get the increment along with their salaries for May 2023.

As per the announcement made by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao in the new Secretariat, the hike will be implemented with immediate effect.

Rao also announced that the salaries of employees of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) will also be increased soon. The Finance Department has been ordered to do the needful to implement the same.

About a year ago, hundreds of sanitation workers of GHMC had staged a protest demanding that their pending salaries be paid. The protest took place at the GHMC headquarters, with at least 300 workers participating and shouting slogans outside the GHMC commissioner’s office, carrying placards criticising the chief minister.

At the time, the president of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Employees Union (GHMEU) had demanded that the biometric machines rented by GHMC be replaced with new machines bought by the GHMC itself, so that attendance is registered accurately and workers do not lose salary unfairly due to the machines playing up. About 700 existing employees had been terminated without being paid, leading to a lot of displeasure at a time when the CM had been talking of making outsourced workers permanent.
