Foxconn has finalised a $230 million dormitory project in Tamil Nadu to support its growing workforce. The facility aims to enhance convenience and living standards for its predominantly female staff as the company continues to expand its operations in India.
The housing complex is located within Foxconn’s premises in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai. It includes six 10-storey residential blocks abd two utility blocks, spread over 20 acres. Designed to accommodate up to 18,000 workers, the dormitories eliminate the need for long commutes. Employees can now live just a short walk from their workplace, significantly improving convenience and safety.
Foxconn employs over 41,000 people at its Chennai facilities, with 35,000 of them being women. This investment is the company’s first major initiative to provide on-site housing for workers in India. The project is expected to uplift the quality of life for its employees, offering them a secure and comfortable living environment.
The complex also features amenities to promote a balanced lifestyle. It includes sports facilities for cricket, badminton, basketball, and volleyball, along with a subsidised canteen and a small grocery store. These additions aim to create a self-sufficient and supportive environment for workers.
In addition to Foxconn’s project, the Tamil Nadu government recently inaugurated another industrial housing facility near Sriperumbudur. Built at a cost of Rs 706 crore, it can accommodate 18,720 women from Foxconn’s workforce and reflects the state’s commitment to supporting industrial growth and workforce welfare.
The dormitories are a positive step in Foxconn’s efforts to integrate convenience and quality of life into its operations, further solidifying India as a key manufacturing hub.
