Amazon is gearing to reduce its workforce by 16,000 in a week’s time and it is likely that members of its India team will also be affected. These cuts are reportedly part of the 30,000 job cuts that were announced by the e-commerce giant earlier.
In an earlier round of cuts about 14,000 jobs were reportedly to be slashed. This looks like the second round now. Some reports say that the cuts will start happening early next week although there seems to be no official announcement out yet.
Why are these layoffs happening? Because of artificial intelligence (AI) is what reports say. Headcount reduction in such big numbers has never happened at Amazon before. of AI. If carried out, the total numbers of job cuts at Amazon over the past few months would touch an alarming 30,000.
It is pertinent to mention here that about 27,000 jobs were cut back in 2023 too.
It is reported that employees have already got a hint of layoffs from their managers, with some even having received Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices. Those who are under a performance improvement plan are reportedly likely to be let go earlier than the others. Again, official confirmation is yet to be received.
Over the past one month, Amazon has quietly rolled out a tool that provides managers and HR leaders with a detailed view of office attendance patterns. Built on employee badge-swipe data, the dashboard offers daily updates and tracks behaviour across a rolling eight-week period. This allows leaders to monitor consistency rather than one-off office visits.
