Maruti Suzuki tightens workplace travel and energy use

HR teams at MSIL have been asked to drive remote work, virtual meetings, and sustainable practices amid global energy crisis

Maruti Suzuki India, the carmaker, has rolled out new workplace measures in response to the Indian government’s call for austerity and the wider impact of the West Asia conflict on energy prices and the economy. The company has asked employees to adopt work-from-home arrangements wherever possible, reducing commuting and fuel consumption.

Foreign travel has been restricted to only critical business needs, while domestic travel is to be kept to a minimum. Staff are encouraged to use virtual meetings as the default mode of engagement. Alongside travel curbs, the company is promoting sustainable commuting practices such as carpooling and public transport.

Energy conservation is another priority. Employees have been asked to optimise the use of air conditioning, fans, and lights both at office and at home. These steps are part of a broader push to revisit processes, improve efficiency and safeguard long-term business health.

The measures follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal earlier this month for citizens and businesses to cut back on gold purchases, foreign travel, and petroleum consumption. The call came as global energy prices surged, the rupee weakened, and foreign exchange reserves declined due to the ongoing crisis in West Asia.

For HR leaders, Maruti Suzuki’s move highlights how workplace policies can directly support national priorities while also reinforcing employee well-being and cost efficiency. The emphasis on remote work, virtual collaboration, and sustainability reflects a growing trend with HR playing a key role in balancing business continuity with social responsibility.
