The Central government of India is reportedly facing a shortage of staff, with more than 8.23 lakh sanctioned posts lying vacant as of March 2024. Data shows that out of 39.23 lakh approved civilian positions, only 30.99 lakh are filled, leaving over one in five jobs unoccupied. The largest gaps are in the Defence Ministry’s civilian workforce, Railways, and the Ministry of Home Affairs, which together account for nearly three fourths of the shortfall.

The Defence Ministry alone reportedly has over 2.42 lakh vacancies, while Railways has 2.40 lakh. The Home Affairs Ministry is short by 1.10 lakh staff. Other departments such as Revenue, Posts, Atomic Energy, Space, Electronics, Environment, Labour, and even top offices like the President’s Secretariat and Prime Minister’s Office also report significant gaps. Health, education, and agriculture departments are struggling too, with some units operating at less than half their sanctioned strength.

States are reported to be responding in different ways to job vacancies. In Andhra Pradesh, the government has released a job calendar to fill 10,060 posts in four phases this year, covering education, police, and administrative services. Jammu and Kashmir has reported over 40,000 vacancies across departments, with the Health and Medical Education Department worst affected. The Chief Secretary has directed officials to speed up recruitment.

Meanwhile, Haryana has taken a controversial step, ordering that all newly created posts in state universities which remain vacant for four years be abolished. Teacher associations have strongly opposed the move, warning it will damage higher education.

While some states are pushing recruitment drives to meet demand, others are cutting back. For job seekers, the vacancies highlight both opportunity and uncertainty in India’s public-sector employment landscape.
