SpiceJet settles pending PF dues of 10 months

SpiceJet has finally deposited 10 months of overdue Provident Fund (PF) contributions. This latest move signals progress in the airline’s efforts to stabilise its operations.

The airline had faced growing dissatisfaction among its workforce as salary deductions were not being credited to their PF accounts, causing financial strain and uncertainty for many employees.

The airline recently cleared outstanding salary arrears and completed payments related to Goods and Services Tax (GST) liabilities. Employees received their pending salaries for July and August, along with the remaining unpaid portions of June’s salary, on the evening of 25 September, 2024. These actions are part of the airline’s broader strategy to regain financial stability following a challenging period marked by financial delays and operational inefficiencies.

The clearing of dues comes on the heels of SpiceJet raising Rs 3,000 crore through a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP). The capital raised through the QIP has allowed the airline to address various financial obligations, including salary payments, tax arrears and employee benefits. The company’s management further acknowledged that the process of clearing outstanding dues is ongoing, with further efforts underway to resolve any remaining financial commitments.

The airline had been under pressure from employees who, in previous months, expressed frustration over delayed salaries and unanswered questions about their PF contributions. These delays not only impacted the personal finances of employees but also had a broader effect on operations and service quality.

The delay in PF deposits had become a significant point of contention, with employees voicing concerns about their hard-earned savings and their financial future. The uncertainty surrounding these missing contributions had resulted in operational inefficiencies, as the workforce’s morale took a hit, indirectly affecting customer service. Media reports had previously highlighted the issue, bringing it to public attention, as employees were unsure of where their deducted PF contributions were going.

With the recent settlement of PF dues, employee morale is expected to improve. Also, with these financial settlements, SpiceJet hopes to turn the page on this difficult chapter and refocus on its operations.
