For those who think generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is here to eat up jobs and cause a decline in hiring, K Krithivasan, CEO and MD, Tata Consultancy Services’ words will sound comforting.
According to Krithivasan, who was speaking at the 32nd Nasscom Technology Leadership Forum, it is too early to say that GenAI is adversely affecting hiring in the information technology space. He points out that the companies are simply realising that they hired too many people and now that there is stability of demand, the existing workforce needs to be optimised.
He does admit that training techniques will need to be changed with increased focus on critical thinking, creativity and strategic planning. He also feels that the demand for certain kind of hires will change, but he is sure that there will be no decline in hiring as such.
In fact, Tata Consultancy Services has started hiring freshers and will continue to hire laterally too.
He drew attention to the fact that Gen AI was only improving the productivity of the programmers, and that the designing, planning and critical thinking aspects would continue to remain important.
Krithivasan also stressed on the importance of in-person work, which encourages collaboration and informal conversations that are important for employees.
At the close of 2023, TCS had a 6.3 lakh-strong workforce, while it had about 5,6000 more employees in the previous quarter, that is, September 2023.
