The state government of Odisha has directed Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technologies (KIIT) authorities to take swift action after tensions escalated over the mistreatment of Nepalese students. The order came a day after Nepal’s foreign minister raised concerns with the chief minister.
Nepal has expressed fears that students could face retaliation if certain staff members remain at the institute. Many Nepalese students are still hesitant to return despite the state government’s assurances and the institute’s apology. Out of nearly 1,000 students from Nepal, only a few have come back to campus.
The situation worsened after a group of students faced forced eviction. They were reportedly taken to a railway station far from Bhubaneswar without proper tickets. Many, especially female students, are still shaken by the ordeal.
Following a review of CCTV footage, police have arrested 10 KIIT employees, including senior officials, security guards, and administrative staff, for their role in the assault on students.
The institute has since taken disciplinary action. Two security staff members were dismissed, while two senior hostel officials and an administrative officer from the International Relations Office were suspended. KIIT authorities have also issued a public apology for the distress caused.
The unrest began after the tragic death of a 20-year-old Nepalese student, Prakriti Lamsal. Her body was discovered in her hostel room on 16 February, the same day the institute was celebrating its foundation day. She was alone at the time, as most students were attending the event.
Tensions flared when Nepalese students demanded to see the body and called for justice. In response, a section of KIIT staff allegedly attacked them, leading to their eviction from the hostel.
