Lawrence to lead human capital strategy for Vedanta’s semiconductor business

Vedanta has named Lawrence Wong Chee Yoong as senior director – human resources (HR) for its semiconductor business. Backed by over two decades of expertise in the semiconductor industry, Lawrence has engaged in HR consultancy, business development, and technology/process transfer. His expertise includes executive leadership search, leadership and organisational development, employer branding, and talent retention.

In the new role at Vedanta, Lawrence will lead the overall human capital strategies for the business, guiding them in establishing a state-of-the-art semiconductor fab unit and semiconductor assembling and testing unit in India. He will be responsible for hiring the best global talent and building the company’s talent pipeline across multiple functions.

Prior to joining Vedanta, Lawrence was associated with Lighthouse Global Resources for 8 years. He joined the company in April 2015 as its global strategic  director. In his role at Lighthouse Global, Lawrence collaborated with some of the top fabless, foundries, and technology companies to provide tailored talent management solutions.

His longest stint was with Photronics Singapore, where he spent over 11 years. He joined the company in December 2003 where he was appointed as the front end manager. He held the role for a good eight years and was then elevated to the position of general manager in March 2012. Lawrence was accountable for the profit and loss (P&L) and operations. 

In the beginning of his career, Lawrence also worked with SSMC, a joint venture between Philips Semiconductor (now NXP) and TSMC. There he was part of the team responsible for  technology transfer during the establishment of the Singapore 8-inch wafer fab start-up.

Welcoming him on his appointment, David Reed, CEO, Vedanta-Foxconn Semiconductors (VFSL), said, “With his rich experience in leading the human resources function for some of the top global semiconductor companies, Lawrence will play a key role in helping attract top talent to India.” 

Expressing enthusiasm for his new role, Laurence said, “I am excited to join Vedanta-Foxconn Semiconductors. I look forward to bringing my industry knowledge and global experience in helping establish India’s first semiconductor fab.” 

Lawrence holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
