Aurigo Software, a company that provides capital planning and construction management software for infrastructure and facility owners, has appointed Dr Sunil Kumar Vuppala as vice president of AI Labs. This role will require Vuppala to lead the company’s global artificial intelligence (AI) strategy, as well as its research and development initiatives.
An alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee and IIM-Ahmedabad, Vuppala completed a PhD in information technology from International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore. He also has a master’s degree in Business Law from National Law School of India University.
In the initial years of his career, Sunil Kumar Vuppala spent almost two years with Oracle, as applications engineer, from 2004 to 2006. He then joined Infosys as a junior research associate. Less than three and a half years into this role, he was promoted to research associate, in 2009. By 2010, he had become senior research associate. Just over two years later he was elevated to research scientist. For the next year and a half, he worked in the research areas of Internet of Things, Smart Grid energy management, Wireless Sensor Networks, Optimisation and M2M. July of 2014 saw him taking on the role of product technical architect for about two and a half years. In between, from 2009 to 2018 he worked on his PhD thesis, titled ‘Optimisation under uncertainty for energy management in smart grid’.
From 2017 to 2019, he was principal scientist, at Philips.
Then began his association with Ericsson as director-data science, in June of 2019. For the next alomost six years, he successfully solved challenging problems in the telecom domain using artificial intelligence (AI).
Sunil Kumar Vuppala has been a visiting/ adjunct faculty at various institutes for almost a decade now. Since 2020 he has been co-chair, industry relations, IEEE.
Now, as vice president-AI Labs, at Aurigo Software Technologies, he will head the entire AI portfolio of Aurigo including strategy, R&D, AI products and services. He will be responsible to drive AI adoption in capital planning and full construction lifecycle segments in the US (federal, state, and local governments) and abroad.

Vuppala has built four AI-first platforms and executed 100+ AI use cases, working with over 30 clients globally. With 40+ patents to his name, including six granted in the US, Vuppala has authored more than 35 technical papers and delivered over 100 guest lectures in academic and industry forums.
