The Uttar Pradesh government has held back the salaries of 68,236 employees, causing widespread concern across departments. Why? The action was taken because these employees failed to submit their mandatory asset declaration forms. The state has a total of about 8.9 lakh government employees, all of whom were instructed to upload details of their movable and immovable assets on the Human Contract Portal by 31 January. Those who did not comply will have their salaries withheld until further notice.
Most of the affected staff belong to Category III, comprising 34,926 individuals. Category IV has 22,624 employees impacted, Category II has 724, and Category I has 2,628 impacted staff members. It is reported that officials have indicated that stopping salaries is only the first step, and further disciplinary measures may follow if declarations are not submitted soon.
The decision reflects the state government’s strict approach to tackling corruption. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, known for his simple lifestyle and tough measures, has introduced several initiatives in recent years, including the controversial ‘Bulldozer’ strategy, which earned him the nickname “Bulldozer Baba”.
The administration has made it clear that salaries will remain suspended until employees disclose their assets fully. Sources suggest that if delays continue, departments may initiate stronger actions against those who fail to comply.
Clearly the Uttar Pradesh government seems determined to enforce transparency and accountability among its workforce.
